How to Plan a 90 Minute Football Training Session
A 90 minute session gives you enough time to prepare the players, isolate the key detail, and test the behavior in a realistic game block. The danger is adding too much.
Use four blocks, not eight activities
Most 90 minute football training sessions work best as activation, technical detail, tactical rehearsal, and competitive transfer.
- Spend 10 to 15 minutes on activation.
- Use 20 minutes for technical or decision detail.
- Protect at least 25 minutes for the tactical theme.
- Finish with 20 to 25 minutes of game transfer.
Keep the tactical thread visible
Every block should point toward the same team behavior, even if the activity changes.
- Repeat the same coaching language across blocks.
- Show the picture on the tactics board before the tactical block.
- Use the final game to reward the behavior, not just goals.
Plan the load before the pitch is set
Ninety minutes can become too heavy if every block is competitive and high intensity.
- Alternate high-intensity work with coaching pauses.
- Keep recovery built into transitions between blocks.
- Adapt the final game length if the tactical block runs long.
