Pressing Drills for Football Training
Pressing is not just running at the ball. Good pressing drills teach players when to jump, how to curve the run, where the cover sits, and what happens after the regain.
Pick one pressing trigger
Pressing improves faster when the whole drill is built around one trigger players can call and recognize.
- Use a backwards pass, poor first touch, sideline trap, or square pass as the trigger.
- Agree the verbal cue before the drill starts.
- Stop only when the trigger was missed or the distances broke down.
Coach the cover behind the first press
The first player makes the press visible, but the second and third players make it effective.
- Set a compact distance between the presser and support players.
- Protect central passing lanes before chasing wide.
- Reward teams that force predictable passes, not only direct regains.
Add the action after the regain
Pressing drills become match realistic when the team has to use the ball immediately after winning it.
- Give the pressing team a mini-goal or target player.
- Limit touches after the regain to sharpen the transition.
- Use short work intervals so intensity stays honest.
